The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended a village head, Chief Edet, for allegedly possessing an illegal AK-47 rifle in Mbo Local Government Area of the state.
Edet, 60, who heads Asik Ubofa fishing settlement in Effiat Clan, was arrested on Tuesday following intelligence reports linking him to unlawful possession of a firearm.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement released on Wednesday in Uyo.
She said the Commissioner of Police, Baba Muhammed Azare, ordered an immediate operation to verify the intelligence and ensure appropriate action.
Acting swiftly, operatives of the command stormed the area at about 10:15am on March 24, 2026, where the suspect was taken into custody without any resistance.
During the raid, the police recovered one AK-47 rifle along with two empty magazines.
According to the statement, the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue to uncover the origin of the weapon, his intentions, and any accomplices connected to the case.
The police described the arrest as a significant success in their ongoing clampdown on illegal arms and criminal elements across the state.
The command also praised residents for their cooperation in providing useful information and encouraged continued public support in the fight against crime.
It further cautioned individuals with unlawful weapons to surrender them to authorities or face legal consequences.
In a separate incident, the Lagos State Police Command recently arrested 18 persons over a violent clash in the Ojo area, where youths were captured in a viral video throwing dangerous objects at one another.
