A tragic incident occurred in Ridawa village, located in Ghari Local Government Area of Kano State, on Wednesday, as a collapsed pit reportedly buried a number of brickmakers.
The mishap was said to have happened in the early hours while the workers were digging soil for brick production.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the labourers were inside the excavation site when it suddenly gave way, trapping many beneath the debris.
Community sources expressed concern that a number of the victims might have died, while others were believed to have sustained injuries of varying severity.
It was learnt that rescue efforts were ongoing, with residents and emergency personnel working tirelessly to reach those still trapped.
As of the time this report was filed, several victims remained unaccounted for, raising fears about their chances of survival.
The member representing Ghari/Tsanyawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Sani Bala, who confirmed the development, said about 10 individuals were suspected to be trapped in the collapsed pit.
He appealed to the government and relevant agencies to urgently step in to support rescue operations and prevent further loss of lives.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, stated that the agency had yet to receive any formal notification of the incident.
According to him, “We have not been officially informed about the situation. The Ghari office is also yet to get any report. Once we receive credible information, we will respond accordingly.”
