President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside members of his cabinet, 32 state governors, and over 8,400 delegates, have converged on Abuja for the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The convention, scheduled to hold at Eagle Square, will see party leaders and stakeholders from across Nigeria elect new executives and deliberate on key party policies ahead of future elections.
According to Mohammed Idris, who also serves as co-chair of the convention media sub-committee, the event is themed “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda.” He noted that the gathering will provide a platform for leadership transition, policy discussions, and reflection on the party’s progress under the Tinubu administration.
Several top government officials and party figures are already in attendance, including Festus Keyamo, Hannatu Musawa, and presidential aides such as Sunday Dare and Bayo Onanuga.
Also speaking ahead of the event, Aminu Bello Masari, chairman of the convention’s central coordinating committee, said all preparations have been completed and confirmed there are no known legal issues that could disrupt the exercise.
He emphasised that the party is operating based on zoning arrangements, warning against attempts by individuals to contest positions outside their designated regions.
Despite this, some party members have raised concerns over alleged exclusion from the process. One of them, Fubara Dagogo, protested his omission from the South-South zonal congress despite meeting all requirements. However, he said he would seek resolution through internal party mechanisms rather than the courts.
Meanwhile, Agbu Kefas, who chairs the convention appeals committee, expressed confidence that the exercise will proceed smoothly, adding that the party is prepared to handle any issues that may arise.
Due to the influx of delegates and heavy security arrangements, the federal government has directed civil servants working within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja to work from home, as roads around the area will be closed for the duration of the convention.
Hotels across Abuja, including major venues like Transcorp Hilton, have been fully booked as party members and supporters flood the capital city for the high-profile political event.
