A High Court in the Gwarzo Division of Kano State has sentenced an 85-year-old man, Malam Isah Abdullahi, to 14 years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of rape.
The judgment, delivered at High Court No. 24, followed a successful prosecution by the Kano State Ministry of Justice.
According to a statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Najib Lawan Dambazau, the incident occurred on November 30, 2024, in Sauna, located within Gabasawa Local Government Area.
He noted that the prosecution presented credible and convincing evidence that established the defendant’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
In her ruling, Justice Aisha Mahmud held that the charge had been proven and consequently imposed a 14-year custodial sentence on the convict.
The court also acknowledged the plea for mercy advanced by the defence counsel before delivering its verdict.
The prosecution was led by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, supported by other members of the legal team.
Reacting, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, praised the prosecution for its thorough handling of the case, describing the outcome as a reflection of the ministry’s dedication to justice.
He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to safeguard victims’ rights and ensure that perpetrators of sexual offences are held accountable under the law.
