Leaders of Nigeria’s National Assembly have called for the adoption of automatic party tickets for serving lawmakers under the All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that it would help sustain ongoing reforms and ensure continuity in governance.
The proposal was a key highlight at the APC’s 4th Elective National Convention held at Eagle Square in Abuja, where party stakeholders gathered to elect new officials and discuss the party’s future direction.
Speaking on behalf of APC caucuses in both chambers, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, said automatic tickets for performing legislators would allow them to focus on governance without the distractions of internal party contests. He noted that the National Assembly has been instrumental in supporting key reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, also backed the proposal, stressing the importance of stability in the legislature for effective governance. He highlighted ongoing government initiatives in education financing, agriculture, infrastructure, and transportation as evidence of progress under the current administration.
While some stakeholders support the idea as a way to maintain continuity, others have cautioned that it could undermine internal democracy within the party. They argue that transparent and competitive selection processes should be preserved.
The proposal is expected to remain a subject of debate within the party as it prepares for future elections and seeks to consolidate its political strength.
