The Oyo State Police Command has commenced a probe into the death of an unidentified teenage boy found at the swimming pool of the University of Ibadan.
In a statement issued in Ibadan on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed that the victim’s remains had been taken to the mortuary of the General Hospital Adeoyo.
Ayanlade disclosed that preliminary findings at the scene revealed bloodstains within the pavilion, while the deceased had blood coming from the nose and mouth, as well as slight injuries around the nose.
He stated that the incident is being handled as a suspected murder, with investigators already working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the case.
According to the police, information was received from the institution’s Chief Security Officer on March 26 that the body of a boy, estimated to be between 14 and 15 years old, was discovered floating in the pool.
He added that by the time officers arrived, the body had been brought out of the water and placed beside the pool.
Personal items believed to belong to the deceased, including footwear and a shirt, were recovered close to the scene.
The spokesperson noted that the victim was subsequently conveyed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead before being deposited at the mortuary.
The command appealed to members of the public to remain calm and desist from spreading unverified reports, assuring that investigations are ongoing to determine what led to the incident.
