Ademola Adeleke has expressed sympathy with residents of Osogbo and surrounding communities following a devastating rainstorm that caused significant damage across parts of Osun State.
The storm, which occurred on Saturday, led to widespread disruption, including the collapse of a large billboard at Aregbe Junction in Osogbo. The structure reportedly fell onto a truck carrying soft drinks, causing panic among residents and obstructing traffic in the busy area.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, the governor described the incident as unfortunate and extended his condolences to affected residents. He assured victims that the state government would provide necessary support to mitigate their losses.
Adeleke said his administration would work through the Osun State Emergency Management Agency to assist those impacted, adding that efforts were underway to assess the extent of the damage.
He also directed the Ministry of Works to immediately begin clearing affected roads to prevent further accidents and restore normal movement in the area.
The governor linked the increasing frequency of such incidents to climate change, noting that his administration is implementing policies aimed at reducing environmental risks. He urged residents to adopt preventive measures such as tree planting and cautioned against indiscriminate deforestation.
The incident comes amid forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency predicting normal to above-normal rainfall in several regions of the country, including the southwest, raising concerns about more weather-related disruptions in the coming months.
