El-Rufai’s mother’s remains brought to Abuja for interment

The body of the late mother of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been received in Abuja ahead of her final burial rites.

Hajiya Umma El-Rufai passed away on Friday, March 27, in Cairo, Egypt, after a short illness, family sources disclosed.

Her grandson and Kaduna North lawmaker, Mohammed El-Rufai, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday, noting that the remains arrived in the Federal Capital Territory earlier in the day.

He stated that funeral prayers would be held at 1 p.m. at the National Mosque Abuja, after which the deceased would be buried at Gudu Cemetery.

He also offered prayers for her soul, asking Allah to grant her eternal peace.

Findings indicated that the deceased had been living with her son in Cairo prior to her death.

Her passing comes amid ongoing legal proceedings involving Nasir El-Rufai, who was recently detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over allegations of corruption and money laundering.

He was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna on March 24 on a 10-count charge, with the matter adjourned until March 31, 2026, for the hearing of applications, including his bail request.

The former governor was, however, granted temporary release to enable him participate in the burial arrangements.

Meanwhile, prominent figures, including Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Uba Sani, have extended condolences to the family and paid tribute to the late matriarch.
