Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has apologised to Vice President Kashim Shettima over a controversial social media comment.
Bashir, in a post shared on X on Sunday, admitted that his earlier remark describing the Vice President as “painfully spineless” was inappropriate.
“I want to use this medium to personally apologise to the Vice-President of Nigeria, His Excellency Sir Kashim Shettima, for my old post referring to his person as spineless,” he wrote.
“He is someone I greatly admire and respect. It was a reckless tweet,” he added.
The deleted post, made on March 6, had urged Shettima to take decisive action against alleged corruption within the Presidential Villa.
“I like Shettima. He’s just painfully spineless. I hope one day he realizes he is positioned in a unique place… to take the whole corrupt system at the Villa down,” Bashir had written.
His apology has since sparked mixed reactions online, with some commending his admission of fault, while others questioned the timing of the retraction.
Responding to critics, Bashir dismissed claims of external pressure, insisting, “There was no truth in the tweet. It was uncalled for and disrespectful. We no dey fear arrest for this side o.”
The development comes amid the political challenges surrounding his father, Nasir El-Rufai, who is facing corruption-related charges before a Federal High Court in Kaduna.
