The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has warned against attempts to reduce the 2027 general elections to a mere formality, insisting that Nigeria’s democracy must reflect the will and welfare of the people.
Speaking during an interview, Adebayo dismissed concerns over a shrinking opposition space, stating that democratic strength should not be measured by the number of defections to ruling parties but by public confidence in governance.
According to him, the essence of democracy lies in citizens’ satisfaction and hope, not in the dominance of any political party.
Opposition Beyond Political Defections
The SDP chieftain downplayed ongoing political realignments ahead of 2027, describing them as a continuation of elite-driven politics that has failed to deliver meaningful progress.
He maintained that his party was not focused on attracting defectors but on mobilising Nigerians to elect credible and competent leaders.
“We are not interested in recycling politicians. What Nigeria needs is a complete reset driven by capable and independent-minded individuals,” he said.
Call for Credible Leadership
Adebayo advocated the emergence of fresh faces in the political landscape, stressing that the current political class has not met the expectations of Nigerians.
He criticised what he termed opportunistic politics, noting that many politicians lack ideological direction and are primarily driven by personal ambition.
He said the country requires leaders with integrity, professional competence and a genuine commitment to national development.
Knocks Ruling Party
Taking a swipe at the All Progressives Congress, Adebayo described it as a reflection of systemic weaknesses within Nigeria’s political structure.
He argued that the party lacks ideological depth and predicted it would lose relevance after the next election cycle.
Push for Electoral Reforms
On the electoral process, Adebayo emphasised the need for credible polls, calling for strict compliance with electronic transmission of results and greater independence for electoral authorities.
Despite reservations about aspects of the current system, he expressed optimism that credible elections are achievable.
Rejects Personality Politics
Commenting on the influence of prominent political figures, including Peter Obi, Adebayo cautioned against personalising democracy.
He stressed that governance should be centred on collective national interest rather than individual ambitions.
Eyes 2027 Presidency
Adebayo confirmed his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election on the SDP platform, expressing confidence in securing broad-based support.
He said his ambition is to emerge with a strong and credible mandate that genuinely reflects the will of Nigerians.
Criticises Tinubu Administration
The SDP candidate also criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of failing to effectively tackle insecurity, unemployment and economic challenges.
He argued that the government’s performance has fallen short of expectations, noting that Nigerians deserve better outcomes.
‘No Room for Sentiment’
Adebayo urged Nigerians to approach the 2027 elections with seriousness, warning against emotional voting.
“2027 must mark a turning point, not a coronation. Nigerians must demand competence, accountability and vision in leadership,” he said.
