Thousands of soldiers from the U.S. Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division have begun arriving in the Middle East, U.S. officials confirmed Monday, marking a significant buildup as President Donald Trump weighs his next moves in the conflict with Iran.
The Fort Bragg-based paratroopers join an earlier deployment of about 2,500 Marines and additional Special Operations forces, intensifying the U.S. military presence in the region. Officials, speaking anonymously, did not disclose the exact locations of the troop deployments, but said they are intended to expand operational capacity for potential missions in the Iran conflict.
The deployment includes elements of the 82nd Airborne Division headquarters, support and logistics units, and one brigade combat team. While no decision has been made to send troops directly into Iranian territory, the forces are being positioned to respond to a range of scenarios.
Among the contemplated operations is a potential attempt to seize Kharg Island, a critical hub for 90 per cent of Iran’s oil exports. Such a mission carries significant risks, given Iran’s missile and drone capabilities in the area. Internal discussions within the Trump administration have also reportedly explored the possibility of deploying ground forces to secure safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz or to extract highly enriched uranium from Iranian facilities.
President Trump said Monday that talks with a “more reasonable regime” are underway to end the conflict but reiterated that Tehran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face U.S. attacks on key oil and power infrastructure.
Any deployment of U.S. ground forces inside Iran could carry political costs for Trump, given low domestic support for the campaign and his pre-election promises to avoid new entanglements in the Middle East.
Since the launch of Operation Epic Fury on February 28, U.S. strikes have targeted more than 11,000 sites, resulting in 13 American fatalities and injuries to over 300 service members.
