A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Alwan Hassan, has warned that the party faces serious consequences following the defection of former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Hassan, who spoke during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Tuesday, said Kano State remains a critical battleground that the APC cannot afford to lose.
He noted that the party had been unable to secure Kwankwaso’s loyalty since 2023, describing the development as a significant political setback.
“The APC is in trouble for losing Kwankwaso to ADC. Kano is big for the APC. If we lose Kano to Kwankwaso in 2027, we are in trouble,” he said.
Hassan further acknowledged that the party lost Kano in the 2023 elections and expressed fear of a repeat outcome, describing Kwankwaso as a dominant political force in the state.
“Kwankwaso had been in the market since 2023, and we have lost him to the ADC,” he added.
Kwankwaso, who ran for president on the New Nigerian Peoples Party platform in 2023, recently crossed to the ADC as political realignments ahead of the 2027 polls continue to gather momentum.
