Mother takes own life after toddler drowns in bucket

A 29-year-old woman reportedly ended her life on Wednesday, April 1, after her 11-month-old son accidentally drowned in a bucket at their home.

The deceased, identified as Pratibha, a software professional, was alone with her son, Agastya, while her husband, Mahantesh, was away at work.

According to sources, the baby wandered into the washing area and fell into a bucket of water while Pratibha briefly went to the terrace to collect laundry.

She is said to have discovered her son unresponsive upon returning and, overwhelmed by grief, initially tried to harm herself by ingesting pills and slitting her wrists before later reportedly hanging herself, police confirmed.

Mahantesh arrived home around 6:30 pm to find the apartment locked. Using a spare key, he entered and found both his wife and son dead.

Authorities recovered a suicide note in which Pratibha expressed guilt over the incident and took responsibility for the tragedy. Investigators also found an empty strip of 15 tablets at the scene.

The family had lived in the rented flat for four years. Police have registered a case, and further investigations are ongoing.
