Media mogul Dele Momodu has accused President Bola Tinubu and his camp of working to eliminate all viable opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The allegation, he said, mirrors the political playbook of the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, who sought to monopolise the 1998 presidential contest.
Momodu’s comments came in response to the move by the Independent National Electoral Commission to strip the African Democratic Congress of its recognised leadership under former Senate President David Mark.
INEC anchored the decision on its reading of a recent Court of Appeal judgment.
The media publisher took aim at the electoral commission, branding it a burden on the nation and tracing its compromised conduct to the voiding of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which the late Chief Moshood Abiola was widely believed to have won.
On X, Momodu pointed to INEC’s hasty endorsement of the Wike faction within the Peoples Democratic Party as evidence of the body’s selective approach to party disputes.
He noted the contrast with the commission’s conspicuous silence over multiple leadership crises within the All Progressives Congress in various states.
With many governors having defected to the ruling party under pressure or persuasion, Momodu cautioned that the opposition risked being hollowed out before the next general election.
“The ultimate aim of Tinubu and his acolytes is to produce a sole candidate in the 2027 presidential election. The last time such a brazen attempt was made was during the Abacha era, 1993 to 1998,” he wrote.
He conceded that the courts remained an option for those affected by the ADC ruling, though he expressed little confidence in that route.
