A mentally challenged woman gave birth to a baby girl by the roadside in Kwaita Village, Kwali Area Council, Abuja, before being rescued by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on April 3, 2026, when officers of the Rapid Response Squad, on routine patrol, were alerted to a woman in distress.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Officer in Charge of the Gender Unit at Kwali Division immediately responded to the scene with her team. “Both the mother and her newborn were safely taken to General Hospital, Kwali, where they received medical care and were later discharged in stable condition,” she said.
The authorities further explained that the welfare of the mother and child was ensured by involving the Officer in Charge of Welfare, Kwali Area Council, Mr. Sadiq Kwali.
They were subsequently transferred to the FCT Children’s Home in Wako, Gwagwalada Area Council, to receive proper care and support.
CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, commended the officers for their swift response and professionalism, noting the compassion shown by male officers in assisting the woman and safeguarding the newborn prior to the Gender Unit’s arrival.
He also urged the public to report emergencies promptly and to assist security agencies in helping vulnerable individuals, particularly those with mental challenges, found in public spaces.
The rescue underscores the FCT Police Command’s ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency response and protection for at-risk persons across the territory.
