Panic spread through Yaba, Lagos, early Saturday as a devastating fire consumed a section of the bustling market, leaving traders scrambling to save their goods.
According to reports, the fire broke out around 3 a.m., rapidly spreading through several shops.
Social media users shared videos showing thick smoke and towering flames as residents rushed to evacuate the area and salvage belongings.
Eyewitness Lugar Feliz, speaking via a TikTok livestream monitored by PUNCH Online, said firefighters were on the scene, but the fire had already engulfed the Popo section of the market.
Many traders expressed frustration over the response time. Adeoluwa Jude, a shop owner near the blaze, tweeted, “Shops behind mine completely burnt down. Billions gone in minutes. Fire service headquarters is just 10 minutes away, yet help came too late.”
Others highlighted challenges faced by the fire service. Sullex Print and Branding reported that out of three fire trucks deployed, only one contained water, while the fire continued to spread to Ajibode Street.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has not issued a formal statement regarding casualties or the full extent of the damage.
Firefighters continue to battle the blaze as residents call for stronger emergency measures to protect the market and prevent further losses.
