A former governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, has advised aspirants within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to focus on contesting party primaries rather than seeking endorsements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Fayemi made the call during an APC stakeholders’ meeting held in Isan Ekiti, where he urged party members to disregard rumours suggesting that certain aspirants had already been endorsed for National Assembly positions.
He explained that while the Electoral Act allows for consensus candidacy, such an arrangement is only valid when all aspirants agree. According to him, where consensus cannot be reached, primaries remain the only legitimate option.
The former governor stressed that any serious aspirant should be willing to test their popularity through a transparent primary election, rather than relying on perceived backing from influential figures.
Fayemi also raised concerns about new entrants into the party, warning against attempts by individuals he described as “tenants” to take control of the APC without following due process.
He further urged aspirants, particularly those currently holding public office, to present their achievements to party members and voters instead of depending on endorsements.
His comments come amid speculation that Governor Biodun Oyebanji and other party leaders may have backed certain candidates—claims the APC leadership in the state has denied, reaffirming its commitment to free and fair competition.
