The African Action Congress (AAC) has called for the arrest and prosecution of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over an alleged threat directed at Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye.
In a statement issued on April 5, 2026, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rex I. Elanu, the party described the remark as dangerous and a threat to press freedom and democratic accountability.
The AAC said the incident reflects a wider pattern of what it termed “violent rhetoric and intimidation,” alleging that similar threats had previously been linked to Wike, including those involving electoral officials during his tenure as governor of Rivers State.
The party referenced past reports and audio recordings in which the minister was allegedly heard making threats, stressing the need for an independent investigation into the claims.
It urged security agencies to act without bias, insisting that no public official should be above the law. The AAC also emphasised the importance of protecting journalists and safeguarding civil liberties in a democratic society.
The controversy follows remarks made by Wike during a media briefing in Abuja, where he reacted to a question from Okinbaloye on the potential emergence of a one-party system in Nigeria. In response, the minister reportedly said he would have “shot” the presenter if it were possible to break through the screen.
The comment has since drawn criticism from civil society groups, media organisations, and opposition figures, sparking calls for accountability.
