An associate professor of African socio-cultural, diplomatic and military history at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Solomon Tai Okajare, has stated that Ondo State has no justification to remain among Nigeria’s economically struggling states, given its vast natural and human resources.
Okajare made the remark while delivering a lecture titled “Unlocking Subnational Economic Power: Practical Pathways for Sustainable Economic Growth in Ondo State” at a lecture series and induction ceremony of Club Elan in Akure, the state capital.
He argued that Ondo State possesses significant assets, including fertile land, an extensive coastline, oil and bitumen deposits, and diverse tourism potential, which should position it as one of the country’s leading economies rather than one that relies heavily on federal allocations.
Describing the situation as a paradox of “poverty amidst plenty,” the don said the state has continued to show limited economic output despite its abundant resources. He noted that several successive administrations have expressed commitment to improving the state’s economy, including efforts by the current government led by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to create a more business-friendly environment and attract investment.
However, he identified challenges such as weak infrastructure, inadequate planning, and macroeconomic instability as key obstacles hindering development. He emphasized that addressing these issues would require deliberate strategies and collective effort from stakeholders within the state.
Okajare urged indigenes and residents of Ondo State to actively contribute to efforts aimed at repositioning the state for sustainable growth, stressing that its current economic status does not reflect its true potential.
Meanwhile, leaders at the event, including the President of Club Elan, Mobolaji Adeyeye, highlighted the importance of professionalism, unity, and shared values among members of the organization. New inductees also pledged to contribute positively to the club’s objectives and broader societal development.
