The Federal Government has announced plans to construct a 168-room ultra-modern hostel for medical students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), as part of efforts to improve infrastructure and boost healthcare training in Nigeria.
The project, funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), will be located within the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in Idi-Araba. It is expected to accommodate two students per room and will be completed within 24 months.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the contractor, Colton Construction Limited, described the facility as a modern, self-contained hostel designed to address accommodation challenges faced by medical students in Lagos.
Officials noted that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s objective of increasing the number of trained doctors and healthcare professionals in the country, particularly in response to ongoing brain drain in the sector.
The project is also expected to support plans to scale up medical training capacity, with a long-term goal of significantly increasing the number of doctors produced annually.
Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Folasade Ogunshola, welcomed the development, highlighting the importance of improved infrastructure in expanding medical education and strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare workforce.
She added that increased investment in facilities such as student accommodation is essential to addressing the country’s shortage of healthcare professionals and improving service delivery.
