The Bauchi State wing of the All Progressives Congress has taken a hard stance against Governor Bala Mohammed, opposing his reported plan to join the party and branding him unwelcome ahead of the 2027 elections.
The decision followed a stakeholders’ and caucus meeting in Abuja, where party leaders warned that admitting the governor could trigger internal discord and weaken the APC’s chances in the state.
Speaking after the meeting, Senator Samaila Dahuwa Kaila disclosed that the gathering unanimously resolved to resist Mohammed’s entry into the party.
The stakeholders argued that the governor’s previous public attacks on the APC and President Bola Tinubu remain a major concern, noting that he had neither withdrawn the statements nor sought rapprochement with party leaders.
They maintained that allowing him into the party without addressing those issues would undermine cohesion and stability within the Bauchi APC.
The group also criticised what it described as a lack of consultation with key stakeholders on the proposed defection, insisting that such an approach runs contrary to the principles of internal democracy.
They added that their position would be escalated to the party’s national leadership, with a call for due process and respect for party structures.
Reports indicate that Mohammed’s move followed a series of engagements with President Tinubu and other APC figures, with talks said to include possible power-sharing arrangements.
However, insiders revealed that negotiations have hit a snag over the governor’s alleged interest in influencing the emergence of his successor.
Despite the resistance from within the Bauchi APC, indications suggest the governor may still proceed with his defection plans, potentially setting off a fresh round of political tension in the state.
