Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the All Progressives Congress has intensified efforts to strengthen its foothold in Kano State, reaching out to former governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, to rejoin the party.
The move was made during a visit by the party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, to Shekarau’s residence in Kano, where he appealed to the former two-term governor to return and support the party’s quest for victory in the next elections.
Yilwatda said the outreach became necessary following the party’s loss of Kano in the last election, noting that reclaiming the state is crucial to its broader political strategy in the North.
He also called on northern leaders to support the continuation of power in the South until 2031 to ensure a smooth rotation back to the North.
According to him, allowing the South to complete its second term would promote fairness and stability in the country’s political arrangement.
The APC chairman described Shekarau as a respected grassroots politician with wide influence across Kano and beyond, stressing that his return would significantly boost the party’s chances.
He added that capturing Kano would have a ripple effect on the party’s performance across the region.
Responding, Shekarau, who is currently a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, acknowledged the visit but pointed to ongoing internal challenges within his party.
He described the situation in the PDP as serious, adding that consultations were ongoing to determine his next political move.
The former governor said he would take a decision after engaging with key stakeholders, including members of his Shura Council.
“In the coming days, I will make my position known after due consultation,” he said.
The development signals renewed political realignments in Kano as parties strategise ahead of the 2027 elections.
