A bloc within the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has initiated talks with leaders of the African Democratic Congress as part of ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meeting, held in Abuja at the residence of former Senate President David Mark, reportedly involved key opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Aminu Tambuwal. Discussions reportedly centred on forming a united opposition front, including possible power-sharing arrangements and adopting a common platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
Despite these reports, Makinde described the gathering as a “solidarity visit,” avoiding confirmation of any formal alliance.
Meanwhile, a rival faction of the PDP loyal to Nyesom Wike rejected claims of any collaboration with the ADC. The group stated that no official meeting was authorised by the party and that those who attended did so in their personal capacities.
At the same time, opposition leaders intensified pressure on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), staging a protest in Abuja to demand recognition of the Mark-led ADC leadership and the resignation of the commission’s chairman over alleged bias.
Both parties remain entangled in internal crises and legal battles, raising uncertainty about the structure and platform of any potential alliance, even as opposition figures continue consultations aimed at forming a united front ahead of the next general elections.
