Former Senator representing Zamfara Central, Kabiru Marafa, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing concerns over internal political manipulations within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Marafa’s defection comes amid ongoing disputes in the ADC following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s derecognition of certain factional leaderships after a March 12 appeal court ruling.
The former lawmaker had resigned from the APC in August 2025, accusing President Bola Tinubu of sidelining Zamfara State despite the region’s support in the presidential election.
In a statement released Thursday by his media team’s Director-General, Mansur Haruna, Marafa said the move represents a major political development, noting that his supporters and political structures have also joined him in the ADC.
“After careful consultations and review of the future direction of our political movement, Senator Marafa formally declared his alignment with the African Democratic Congress,” the statement said.
The statement added that Marafa held extensive discussions with political allies and stakeholders during a strategic meeting in Kaduna before making the decision. He called on Zamfara residents to register with and support the ADC, describing it as a credible platform for accountability, good governance, and political renewal.
Marafa explained that his departure from the APC was due to growing concerns about party practices, including alleged misuse of the National Identification Number (NIN) database for political registration. He said his resignation would follow due process to remove his name from the APC membership roll.
He also revealed plans to return to his hometown to formalise his ADC membership, followed by a major rally of party supporters in Gusau, the state capital, while warning of ongoing attempts to destabilise opposition parties in the region.
