Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has alleged that his former deputy, Aminu Abdussalam, made a failed attempt to unseat him and assume control of the state before his sudden resignation.
Yusuf made the disclosure on Friday at the Government House in Kano while hosting a group of praise singers, in what marked his first public remarks on the political crisis that led to his deputy’s exit from office.
Abdussalam, also known as Gwarzo, had stepped down amid an impeachment threat by the Kano State House of Assembly, which was later suspended following his resignation.
Reacting to the development, the governor expressed uncertainty over the circumstances surrounding the resignation, stating that he had yet to receive any official communication confirming his deputy’s decision to quit.
He maintained that, to his knowledge, no allegation of misconduct had been established against Abdussalam prior to his exit.
According to Yusuf, the unfolding events were linked to what he described as an unsuccessful plot to remove him from office and take over leadership of the state.
The governor also questioned the political fate of his former deputy within the Kwankwasiyya Movement, suggesting that he may have been unfairly treated after leaving office.
He wondered why Abdussalam, if indeed he resigned in pursuit of another political opportunity, was allegedly denied the chance, insisting that such an outcome raised concerns about fairness.
The controversy comes amid sustained political tension in Kano, as stakeholders continue to monitor the implications of the deputy governor’s resignation on the state’s evolving power dynamics.
