Narrow escape as chemical-laden tanker overturns in Lagos, spills cargo in Mushin

Residents of Daleko in Mushin area of Lagos State escaped what could have been a major disaster in the early hours of Friday after a tanker conveying industrial chemicals overturned and discharged part of its content on the road.

The accident, which occurred about 3:00 a.m. along the Daleko axis of Mushin, involved a white Volvo tanker that lost control and fell, leaving its hazardous load exposed on the roadway.

No life was lost in the incident, even as the nature of the cargo raised immediate concern over possible environmental and safety implications.

Emergency responders were swiftly mobilised following distress alerts, with operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority working alongside personnel of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to secure the scene and prevent further escalation.

Authorities later confirmed that plans were underway to bring in an empty tanker to transfer the remaining chemicals in a controlled operation to avert further spillage.

In a related development on Friday morning, another accident was recorded when an articulated Mack truck rammed into the median along Ijaye Road by Odo Eran, inward Ogba area of Lagos State.

The lone crash, however, did not disrupt traffic flow, as vehicles continued movement on the axis without significant delay.
