The spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has called for the immediate resignation of Joash Amupitan, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), over allegations of partisan activity.
The controversy stems from claims circulating online that Amupitan operated a personal account on X (formerly Twitter) and used it to engage with politically biased content.
However, the INEC chairman, through his spokesperson Adedayo Oketola, dismissed the allegations as false, describing them as a fabrication and urging the public to disregard the reports.
Reacting in a statement, Abdullahi argued that the credibility of an electoral umpire must remain unquestionable, insisting that even the perception of bias is damaging to democracy.
He described the alleged conduct as a serious breach of trust, adding that attempts to erase digital evidence, if true, would further undermine accountability.
According to him, the ADC plans to escalate the matter by petitioning relevant authorities, including international bodies and the Nigerian Bar Association, while also considering civil disobedience actions.
Abdullahi maintained that anything short of Amupitan’s resignation would erode public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system and set a dangerous precedent.
