The Federal Government has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to withdraw and deactivate passports belonging to individuals who have officially renounced their Nigerian citizenship.
The directive was issued by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement released by his media aide.
According to the minister, the decision applies to Nigerians whose renunciation has been formally approved by the President, in line with provisions of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
He explained that once a person’s renunciation is registered, they cease to be Nigerian citizens and are no longer entitled to hold national documents such as passports.
Tunji-Ojo said the move is part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the integrity of Nigeria’s citizenship system and closing loopholes that previously allowed former citizens to retain and use Nigerian passports.
He added that the policy is designed to enhance border security, prevent identity fraud, and ensure that only eligible individuals have access to Nigerian travel documents.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the sanctity of citizenship while facilitating legitimate travel and tightening controls against misuse of official documents.
