The Nigeria Police Force has launched a full-scale investigation into alleged misconduct and attempted extortion involving officers attached to the Satellite Town Division in Lagos, following the resurfacing of a viral stop-and-search video.
The Force confirmed that all personnel captured in the footage have been identified and invited for questioning as part of ongoing internal disciplinary proceedings.
In a statement issued on Saturday via X, the Police Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Giwa, said the authorities acted promptly after the video regained traction online.
He disclosed that preliminary findings showed the incident occurred in May 2025, although it only recently drew widespread attention on social media.
According to him, the Divisional Police Officer and other officers involved have been interrogated, with statements obtained and interviews conducted to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the encounter.
Giwa added that efforts were ongoing to reach individuals featured in the video, noting that their testimonies would be crucial to the investigation.
He emphasised that the process was transparent and not an attempt to shield any officer from accountability.
“This is not a cover-up but a demonstration of accountability,” he stated, assuring that the Force would provide updates as the investigation progresses.
The police spokesman reiterated that disciplinary measures apply to all personnel regardless of rank, stressing that no case is too old to be reviewed if new evidence emerges.
He also commended members of the public for drawing attention to the incident, noting that citizen engagement remains vital in promoting accountability within the Force.
The viral footage showed officers conducting a roadside stop-and-search operation in Satellite Town, Lagos, during which an individual recorded the encounter and questioned the conduct of the officers.
The video further captured moments of tension, including the use of harsh language by one of the officers and the relocation of the individuals to another part of the road during the search.
