China on Monday dismissed allegations that it had supplied or was planning to supply weapons to Iran, describing the claims as unfounded and misleading.
The denial followed reports by some international media outlets, citing United States intelligence sources, which alleged that Beijing was preparing to provide military support to Tehran.
The development came amid rising tensions after US President, Donald Trump, warned that China could face a fresh 50 per cent tariff if it proceeds with any form of military assistance to Iran.
According to reports, a US-based media outlet had claimed that intelligence assessments suggested China might soon deliver air defence systems to Iran. Another report also alleged that shipments of shoulder-fired missiles could have already been made.
Reacting, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, rejected the claims, insisting that the country maintains strict control over the export of military equipment.
He stated that China adheres to its domestic export regulations as well as international obligations in handling defence-related transactions.
“China has always adopted a prudent and responsible approach to the export of military items,” Guo said, adding that the country opposes what he described as “baseless accusations and deliberate misrepresentation.”
China remains a major economic partner of Iran, particularly in the energy sector, as it accounts for a significant share of Iran’s oil exports.
However, analysts note that while both countries maintain close economic ties, there is no formal military alliance between them, with relations largely driven by mutual economic interests.
Beijing also maintains strong ties with Gulf nations and has, at various times, criticised Iran’s actions in the region, underscoring its balancing role in Middle East affairs.
