Nigeria and Morocco are set to sign an intergovernmental agreement in 2026 for a massive $25 billion gas pipeline project known as the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP). The project will span about 6,900 kilometres across several African countries and is designed to transport up to 30 billion cubic metres of natural gas.
According to Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines, the agreement will lead to the creation of a joint project company between Nigeria’s NNPC and Morocco. This company will handle financing, construction, and execution of the pipeline.
The pipeline is expected to improve energy supply across West Africa, boost electricity generation, and support industrial development. It will also help connect African gas resources to European markets through Morocco.
Officials say the project has already completed feasibility studies, and while full funding is not yet secured, interest from investors is strong due to its scale and strategic importance.
Gas delivery is expected to begin around 2031, with the project being developed in phases across participating countries.
