Former Minister of Interior and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Rauf Aregbesola, on Tuesday criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, calling for his resignation over worsening economic conditions and insecurity in the country.
Aregbesola, who spoke at the party’s ongoing national convention in Abuja, described the Federal Government’s “Renewed Hope” agenda as misleading, insisting that the policy direction had failed to deliver tangible relief to Nigerians.
He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of mismanaging the economy and deepening hardship, noting that key indicators such as exchange rates, fuel prices and cost of living had deteriorated since the administration assumed office in 2023.
According to him, the depreciation of the naira and rising fuel costs have compounded the burden on citizens in an import-dependent economy, while transportation and basic living expenses have become increasingly unaffordable.
The former Osun State governor also expressed concern over the state of electricity supply, alleging that many parts of the country now experience prolonged outages, contrary to earlier promises by the government.
He maintained that the worsening security situation across the country reflects a failure of leadership, adding that the government’s response to violent attacks had been inadequate.
Aregbesola further claimed that poverty levels had risen and the number of out-of-school children had increased, stressing that the country was drifting without clear direction.
He said the ADC remained committed to offering an alternative platform, urging Nigerians to support efforts aimed at repositioning the country.
The former minister also called on citizens to actively participate in the political process, warning against political apathy at a critical time in the nation’s democratic journey.
The convention, which drew party delegates from across the country, is expected to deliberate on key issues, including party leadership and strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
