Rotimi Amaechi has urged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to present a strong presidential candidate capable of defeating Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Amaechi spoke on Tuesday at the party’s national convention in Abuja.
He advised party members to avoid ethnic and religious considerations when selecting a candidate, warning that such factors could weaken efforts to build a formidable opposition.
“If you think President Tinubu will hand over power to you, you are wasting your time. ADC must come together and decide on a viable candidate,” he said.
Drawing from his experience in the All Progressives Congress (APC) before the 2015 elections, Amaechi said the party succeeded by focusing on a candidate with broad national appeal.
He also criticised the current administration, alleging that opposition activities were being suppressed.
The ADC had earlier claimed it was denied access to major venues, including Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, for its convention, forcing a change of venue.
Amaechi questioned the development, saying it raised concerns about democratic principles.
He referenced National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), noting that it was founded to defend democracy during military rule, and expressed concern over what he described as a departure from such ideals.
The former Rivers State governor also faulted the government’s handling of insecurity and economic challenges, describing the situation in the country as worsening.
