President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accused former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of attempting to “privatise” the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as the party continues to grapple with internal leadership disputes.
Speaking at the State House while receiving members of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Tinubu linked the ongoing crisis within the ADC to what he described as Atiku’s failed attempt to take control of the party structure.
The president also criticised Atiku’s past role as chairman of Nigeria’s privatisation council, citing the underperformance of previously privatised national assets such as Ajaokuta Steel Company.
The ADC has been deeply divided since July 2025, when a coalition led by David Mark assumed leadership of the party. The development sparked opposition from other factions, including one led by Nafiu Bala, who challenged the legitimacy of the new leadership.
The crisis has since resulted in multiple factions within the party, with further complications arising after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) withdrew recognition from the rival groups following a court ruling.
The Supreme Court of Nigeria is expected to hear the case on April 22, a decision that could determine the future leadership of the party.
