The Nigerian Correctional Service in Yobe State has declared a convicted inmate wanted after he escaped following a road accident involving a vehicle conveying prisoners.
The incident occurred on April 13 along the Potiskum–Damaturu road while inmates were being transported from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum to Damaturu.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Adamu, confirmed that the inmate fled the scene amid efforts to rescue victims of the crash.
According to the statement, the escapee, identified as Dahiru Mohammed, 30, hails from Askiwari village via Tarmuwa. He bears prison number J/1539/24 and was admitted into custody on November 29, 2024.
The command described the fugitive as dangerous and warned members of the public against engaging with him.
It urged residents with useful information about his whereabouts to report to the nearest police station or correctional facility without delay.
The NCoS also provided emergency contact lines for prompt reporting, including 07038397460, 07063348987, the MSCC Potiskum Duty Office on 08062211873, and the Yobe State Command headquarters on 08038452982.
The command further cautioned that harbouring a fugitive is a criminal offence punishable under the law and appealed to the public for cooperation in ensuring the inmate’s re-arrest.
