The New Nigeria Peoples Party has distanced itself from the coalition being formed on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, dismissing claims by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar that it is part of the alliance.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the National Secretary of the party, Olaposi Ogini, said the NNPP had no plans to merge with or align itself under the ADC.
He expressed surprise at Atiku’s assertion during a television interview that the NNPP was among parties in the coalition.
Ogini clarified that the involvement of some political figures, including Rabiu Kwankwaso and members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, in the ADC did not translate to the party’s participation.
According to him, the NNPP remains an independent political platform focused on contesting elections and pursuing its programmes without external alignment.
He explained that the party’s previous relationship with the Kwankwasiyya Movement ended after the 2023 general elections, adding that those associated with the group were no longer acting on behalf of the NNPP.
The party secretary also noted that some members of the movement had since joined other political parties, insisting that such actions should not be attributed to the NNPP.
He maintained that while the party harbours no ill will towards the ADC, it has no intention of joining the coalition, reiterating its commitment to operating independently within Nigeria’s political space.
