The Association of Igbo Residents in Ibadan has declared support for Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, warning against alleged political moves capable of destabilising the state, particularly amid controversies surrounding the Olubadan stool.
Speaking at a press conference in Ibadan, the group expressed concern over recent political developments and comments attributed to former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, which it said could threaten the prevailing peace in the state.
Addressing journalists on behalf of the association, Barrister Ndo Ofurenna commended the Makinde administration, describing it as inclusive and development-driven across key sectors.
The group criticised Fayose for what it termed unwarranted interference in Oyo State affairs, noting that such actions could heighten political tension.
It further alleged that some political actors were attempting to exploit issues relating to the Olubadan stool to weaken the state government.
Describing the traditional institution as sacred, the association cautioned against dragging it into partisan politics or using it to advance personal interests.
“We condemn any attempt to politicise the Olubadan stool or use it as a tool for political manipulation,” the group said.
On succession politics, the association stressed that the process of selecting candidates is guided by the Electoral Act, either through consensus or party primaries, adding that the governor is not obligated to impose a successor.
The group also dismissed reports of an impeachment plot against the governor as baseless, insisting that Makinde continues to enjoy public support.
It noted that the state had witnessed relative peace, inclusiveness and development under the current administration.
The association urged residents to remain calm and disregard what it described as politically motivated narratives capable of causing division.
It also called on leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party to caution members against statements that could deepen internal disagreements.
Reaffirming its support for the governor, the group pledged its commitment to sustaining peace and unity in the state.
