No fewer than nine cows have reportedly died after consuming suspected poisoned oranges allegedly dumped in a grazing area in Rankum community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Sources in the community said the incident occurred on Saturday while herders were grazing their cattle.
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Plateau State chapter, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday in Jos.
The statement, signed by the state Chairman, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, condemned the incident, describing it as “senseless and unfortunate.”
According to the association, the cows belonged to herders who were engaged in what it described as lawful and peaceful grazing at about 4:00 p.m. when the incident occurred.
MACBAN noted that the killing of livestock not only affects the livelihoods of herders but also poses economic hardship for pastoral families.
The association called on security agencies to launch a thorough investigation, identify those responsible, and ensure they are prosecuted.
It also urged community leaders, youth groups, and other stakeholders in the area to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tension.
Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful coexistence, the association appealed to the Plateau State Government and relevant authorities to take proactive steps to safeguard lives and property and prevent a recurrence.
MACBAN stressed that dialogue and mutual understanding remain essential to sustaining peace among communities in the state.
