The Israel Defense Forces has confirmed the authenticity of a viral image showing one of its soldiers striking a statue of Jesus with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon, pledging that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken.
The military disclosed this in a statement issued shortly after midnight on Sunday, following widespread circulation of the image on social media. Earlier, its spokesperson, Nadav Shoshani, had indicated that an investigation into the incident was underway.
According to the IDF, preliminary findings established that the photograph indeed captured one of its personnel operating in southern Lebanon.
The military condemned the act, describing it as inconsistent with the conduct expected of its troops.
It noted that the incident occurred in Debel, a predominantly Christian community where Israeli forces had previously conducted operations targeting Hezbollah.
The IDF added that the matter is being investigated by its Northern Command and is being handled through established military procedures.
It further assured that sanctions would be applied in line with the outcome of the investigation, while efforts would also be made to repair the damaged statue.
Reacting, Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar, denounced the act and tendered an apology, describing it as disgraceful and contrary to the country’s values.
He expressed confidence that those responsible would face strict consequences, reiterating Israel’s commitment to religious tolerance and respect for sacred symbols.
Sa’ar also extended an apology to members of the Christian community affected by the incident.
