The Lagos State Police Command has detained a police officer attached to Area M Command over allegations of extorting N10,000 from a motorist in the Idimu area.
The action followed a viral social media post showing the officer allegedly collecting money from the victim after accusing him of discrepancies in his vehicle’s registration details.
According to the motorist, the officer claimed that the colour of the vehicle did not match the particulars on the registration documents, despite confirmation that it was listed as ash.
He alleged that the officer initially demanded N30,000 to avoid arrest but later accepted N10,000 after negotiations before allowing him to leave.
In the video circulating online, the motorist recounted that he was stopped and asked to present his documents, which were checked by multiple officers.
He said after about 30 minutes, the officer questioned the colour of his vehicle and insisted it was grey rather than ash, threatening to detain him over the alleged discrepancy.
Confirming the development, the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said the officer had been identified and taken into custody, while investigations were ongoing.
She assured that the outcome of the probe would be made public in due course.
Similarly, the Police Complaint Response Unit stated that the officer had been queried and was undergoing further investigation.
The unit reiterated the command’s stance against misconduct, assuring that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings.
