The Federal Government has brought a 13-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against six individuals accused of attempting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The defendants include a retired major general, a former naval captain, a serving police inspector, and three civilians. According to court documents, they are facing allegations of waging war against the country, alongside offences related to treason and terrorism.
The charges represent a major step in an investigation that has been ongoing for several months and involves both military personnel and civilians.
Concerns about a possible coup first emerged in October 2025 after the Federal Government abruptly cancelled Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day parade. At the time, speculation linked the decision to security threats, including a potential plot to topple the government.
However, the Defence Headquarters dismissed those claims, stating the cancellation was unrelated to any coup attempt.
Subsequent reports revealed that at least 16 military officers were arrested in connection with the alleged plot, while two others were declared wanted.
In January 2026, the Defence Headquarters later confirmed that a conspiracy to overthrow the government had indeed been uncovered.
