Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has exited the Federal Executive Council, formally stepping down to pursue his ambition of becoming the next governor of Oyo State.
In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu disclosed that his resignation would take effect from April 30, allowing time for a proper handover of duties.
The correspondence, forwarded through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, expressed his appreciation to the President for the trust placed in him, describing his tenure as an honour and a rare opportunity to serve the nation.
Adelabu noted that his time in office afforded him the chance to contribute to ongoing reforms in the electricity sector, which he identified as crucial to Nigeria’s economic advancement.
He explained that his decision to leave the cabinet was informed by his resolve to focus entirely on his governorship bid, in compliance with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act, which prohibits serving political appointees from contesting elections.
The former minister further traced his political ambition to 2016 when he served as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, a goal that prompted his resignation from the apex bank in 2018.
His departure is expected to reshape the political landscape in Oyo State as momentum builds ahead of the next governorship election.
