Iyabo Obasanjo, a former governorship aspirant in All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, has alleged that some of her supporters were physically assaulted during events leading to the party’s adoption of a consensus candidate for the 2027 election.
The controversy follows the endorsement of Solomon Adeola as the APC’s preferred governorship candidate, announced by Governor Dapo Abiodun after a caucus meeting in Abeokuta.
In a statement released on Thursday, Obasanjo said she had supported the consensus arrangement as a way to promote unity within the party. She also confirmed that she suspended her governorship ambition after Adeola’s emergence.
However, she expressed dissatisfaction with how the process was handled, describing it as lacking inclusiveness.
“On the day of the meeting, some of my supporters were denied entry and regrettably, two were physically assaulted by a party functionary,” she said.
Obasanjo also noted that certain aspirants, including herself and Tunde Lemo, were not acknowledged during the meeting despite their involvement in consultations and grassroots mobilization.
Despite her concerns, she reaffirmed her loyalty to the APC and pledged support for the party’s candidate and the administration of Bola Tinubu.
She urged party leaders to adopt a more inclusive approach, stressing that true unity must reflect fairness, recognition, and collective participation.
The development comes amid broader tensions within the Ogun APC, with Gbenga Daniel also recently alleging he was denied access to a party caucus meeting in Ijebu Ode.
