The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has reacted to comments attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on the 2027 governorship race in the state.
Speaking in Port Harcourt on Thursday, the state chairman of the party, Chukwudi Dimkpa, said the emergence of a governor remains the exclusive decision of the electorate through a democratic process.
Dimkpa stated that the ADC was focused on promoting transparency, internal democracy and inclusive participation as it prepares for the next election cycle.
He said the party was committed to building a broad-based political platform that reflects the aspirations of the people of the state.
On the issue of zoning, the party acknowledged its importance in ensuring fairness and balance, particularly between riverine and upland communities.
However, the chairman stressed that competence and capacity must also be considered in the selection of candidates.
According to him, the ADC would adopt a consultative approach in determining its flag bearer, with the aim of presenting a candidate capable of delivering effective governance and enjoying wide acceptance.
He added that the party would, in due course, take decisions that would strengthen unity and deepen democratic values within its ranks.
Dimkpa further noted that issues such as security, governance and economic development remain top priorities for residents, stressing that leadership choices must align with these concerns ahead of the 2027 elections.
