The Federal Road Safety Corps has handed over N101,170 and a motorcycle recovered from the scene of a fatal hit-and-run crash to the families of the victims in Ondo State.
The items were presented on Friday in Akure by the state Sector Commander, Dr Samuel Ibitoye, who said the gesture underscored the corps’ commitment to transparency and accountability.
Ibitoye explained that the accident occurred on January 5 at about 5:40am along Ijoka Road, involving an articulated vehicle and a motorcycle, resulting in the death of the rider and his passenger.
According to him, FRSC rescue operatives evacuated the victims to the state hospital morgue and recovered both the motorcycle and the sum of N101,170 at the scene.
“Today, we are handing over the motorcycle to the family of the rider and the money recovered to the children of the deceased passenger.
“This is to demonstrate our integrity, transparency, and empathy, and to assure the public that all items recovered from crash scenes are preserved and returned appropriately,” he said.
The sector commander reiterated the corps’ mandate to protect lives and property, stressing that even the smallest item recovered at accident scenes is duly accounted for.
He also urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to exercise patience and caution on the roads to prevent avoidable crashes.
“Road users must be considerate. No one should endanger the lives of others through reckless behaviour,” he said, advising motorcyclists and tricycle operators to avoid night travel where possible.
Responding, a daughter of the deceased passenger, Aderonke Akinyike, commended the FRSC for returning the money intact.
“My mother was on her way to the market when the accident happened. The money she had with her has been returned in full. We appreciate the FRSC for their honesty,” she said.
Also, the elder brother of the deceased rider, Niyi Akinnajo, alongside the widow, Funke Akinlade, praised the corps for releasing the motorcycle to the family without any charges.
