Ex-aviation minister Sirika declares senate return bid amid corruption trial

Former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has announced his intention to contest for the Katsina North Senatorial District senate seat in the 2027 general elections.

Sirika made the declaration on Friday at the All Progressives Congress secretariat in Katsina, saying supporters persuaded him to return to the race.

He said that if elected, he would focus on improving the welfare and living conditions of people in the district.

Sirika previously served in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007 and was later elected to the Senate in 2011.

His announcement comes while he is standing trial over allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission involving abuse of office and the award of multi-billion naira contracts to relatives during his time as aviation minister.

During his tenure, the aviation ministry also unveiled Nigeria Air in 2023, a move that sparked controversy over its ownership structure.
