Governor Alex Otti has reiterated that political affiliation and state of origin do not influence appointments under his administration, stressing that merit remains the overriding criterion.
The governor made the remark in Umuahia during the wedding ceremony of his Aide-de-Camp, Emeka Ogbonna, according to a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku.
Otti said his government prioritises competence and capacity in selecting public officials, noting that background considerations such as party membership or place of origin are irrelevant.
Citing the appointment of his ADC, the governor explained that the decision was based solely on merit, adding that he was unaware of the officer’s background at the time of selection.
He further stated that the policy applies across board, emphasising that his administration is open to qualified individuals regardless of political or regional affiliations.
The governor also explained the appointment of Dr Ezinne Benjamin-Kalu as Chairman of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital Management Board, noting that she emerged top among seven candidates after a rigorous selection process.
According to him, the wide margin between her and other contenders underscored the administration’s commitment to excellence.
Otti maintained that the merit-driven approach extends to ongoing recruitment in the state, including the engagement of over 5,000 teachers and plans to hire an additional 4,000.
He added that placing competent individuals in key positions remains central to improving governance and service delivery in Abia State.
