A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kefas Ropshik, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Plateau State, pledging to address insecurity and youth unemployment.
Ropshik made his ambition known on Sunday while addressing supporters in his local government area, stating that the state requires urgent and practical solutions to its security and economic challenges.
The move comes amid persistent violence in parts of Plateau, particularly in Mangu, Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas, where recurring communal clashes and land disputes have led to loss of lives and displacement of residents.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the PDP chieftain said although the gathering was not his formal declaration, the turnout reflected growing support for his aspiration.
“I am encouraged by the large turnout, even though this is not an official declaration. It shows that the people are ready for change, and I am prepared to serve them,” he said.
On insecurity, Ropshik described the situation as alarming and pledged to prioritise the protection of lives and property if elected.
“Our state is richly endowed, yet our people live in fear. Insecurity has claimed lives and disrupted livelihoods. If given the mandate, safeguarding our communities will be my top priority,” he stated.
He proposed a community-based security framework involving collaboration between residents, traditional institutions and security agencies to restore peace across the state.
Addressing unemployment, Ropshik said his administration would focus on youth empowerment through skills acquisition and support for small and medium-scale enterprises.
“Youth unemployment is both an economic and security concern. We will create opportunities by investing in skills development and enabling businesses to thrive,” he added.
The governorship aspirant also promised to improve infrastructure and ensure equitable distribution of development projects across the state.
“We must invest in roads, schools, healthcare and other essential services. Development must be inclusive and reach every community,” he said.
Ropshik further expressed appreciation for the support received, noting that it reflected the collective desire of Plateau residents for a more secure and prosperous future.
