Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned against any plan to halt political campaigns in parts of Northern Nigeria due to insecurity, saying such a move could threaten constitutional rights and disenfranchise voters.
Atiku reacted to reports that the Senate may consider suspending political activities in eight states affected by rising violence, including Borno State, Benue State and Plateau State.
In a statement issued by his aide, Phrank Shaibu, the African Democratic Congress presidential aspirant said insecurity must not be used as an excuse to limit democratic participation.
He stressed that the rights to vote, campaign and participate in elections are fundamental, warning that any targeted restriction could deepen distrust and division across the country.
Atiku also called on Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies and the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reassure Nigerians that no region would be denied its democratic rights.
The controversy followed a proposal by Senator Abdul Ningi, who urged the Senate to consider suspending political activities in states worst hit by insurgency and banditry until security improves.
