The Peoples Democratic Party in Jigawa State has declared its intention to contest all elective positions in the 2027 general elections, dismissing rumours of impending defections within its ranks.
The party’s State Chairman, Babandi Gumel, gave the assurance on Sunday while addressing a joint meeting of the State Working Committee and local government chairmen at the party’s secretariat in Dutse.
Gumel said the party remained united and focused, stressing that it would present candidates for all available positions in the next election cycle.
He also debunked speculation that the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Mustafa Lamido, was planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Describing the rumours as baseless, the PDP chairman attributed them to political opponents, insisting that the party was intact and strengthening its structures ahead of the polls.
According to him, the party’s track record in governance, particularly under former governor Sule Lamido, remains unmatched in the state.
Gumel urged party leaders at the grassroots to intensify the ongoing electronic membership registration exercise to ensure wider participation in future primaries.
He also announced the constitution of a 13-member committee to oversee the sale of nomination forms and screening of aspirants, directing interested members to liaise with the committee at the party secretariat.
The chairman reiterated that the PDP was repositioning itself to mount a strong challenge in 2027, expressing confidence in the party’s chances of reclaiming power in the state.
